In Kolkata, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is delving into a troubling rape case involving a woman on the premises of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management–Calcutta (IIM-C) located in Joka. The investigation has encountered several perplexing issues that need clarification.
The first point of confusion revolves around conflicting accounts regarding the victim's entry and exit times on campus. Sources indicate that the timings provided by the victim do not align with those reported by certain staff members, who allegedly observed her arriving on campus via an app-based taxi with the accused and later leaving in another cab.
Interestingly, the victim's initial statement to the police did not mention the use of app-cabs.
The second area of uncertainty pertains to the victim's assertion that she is a professional psychological counselor. She claimed to have been invited to the IIM-C campus by the accused, Parmanand Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain, a second-year student. However, insiders noted that she has not provided any documentation to substantiate her claims of being a qualified counselor.
The third and most critical confusion lies in the contradictory statements made by the victim and her father. The victim alleged that she was summoned to the boys' hostel for counseling, where the accused offered her pizza and drinks that were allegedly laced with sedatives, causing her to lose consciousness. She reported that Parmanand then assaulted her while she was incapacitated.
Conversely, the victim's father has publicly stated that his daughter did not experience any such incident, asserting that she lost consciousness after falling from a vehicle.
Despite the father's claims, a trial court has ordered the accused to remain in police custody until July 19.
